Development of a modular electro-regenerative chimney system IN852A 2018/18
Four Galician companies with the support of UVIGO combined their knowledge and efforts to successfully develop a modular electroregenerative chimney system in the CMR project through the development, optimization and implementation at an industrial level of new manufacturing technologies with maximum energy efficiency and control intelligent. The solution adopted is an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC), which will be a commercial technology for the production of electrical energy from medium or low temperature energy sources.
During the project, we designed, built, and installed a tubular coil type heat exchanger, to recover waste heat from a chimney. Particularly delicate was the integration of this equipment into the gas duct body itself, guaranteeing its mechanical and thermal resistance, low pressure drop and at the same time sufficient turbulence for adequate heat transfer. This equipment is the evaporator of the built ORC system shown in the photograph.
The fluid evaporated in the multiple recovery units (up to three in series/parallel) is subsequently expanded producing the necessary work for the electric motor coupling. We designed the system for gases with a maximum temperature not exceeding 450°C and a 5% transformation efficiency was achieved in steady state operation from a 24 kW thermal reservoir. The final prototype includes a complete integrated regulation and control system.
